Golf trip controversial for Beckett

BOSTON (AP) — Josh Beckett must have lasted longer on the golf course than he did on the mound.

The embattled Red Sox ace was booed off the field at Fenway Park when he was pulled after just 2 1-3 ineffective innings Thursday night against Cleveland.

Hours earlier, Boston manager Bobby Valentine downplayed the uproar over Becketts golf outing last week, which came a day after he was scratched from his scheduled start because of stiffness.

Already in hot water with Red Sox fans when the story surfaced that Beckett was hitting the links with his sore lat, Beckett was jeered early and often Thursday as the Indians tagged him for seven runs and seven hits, including...

Perfect weather brings thousands out to Panoply Arts Festival 2012

HUNTSVILLE, Alabama — Arts Council Executive Director Allison Dillon-Jauken may have said it best Saturday without saying a word. Her big sigh signaled that Panoply Arts Festival was back in a big way.

I really dont think it could be any more perfect, Dillon-Jauken said she watched thousands of people streaming through Big Spring International Park under breezy blue skies.

The festival was back after being canceled in 2011 because the community was without power after tornadoes swept through the county on April 27. Every available resource was directed toward recovery efforts, and it wasnt the time for a fun festival to celebrate the arts.

A year later, it was....

Pleasant Grove awards ‘Get up and Move’ fitness champions

PLEASANT GROVE — A weight loss challenge for the Pleasant Grove 2012 Get Up and Move healthy fitness program ended Saturday with a tie between two very dedicated women.

It was a hair between the two, said organizer Councilwoman Kim Robinson. My coaches and I only felt comfortable awarding both. There were too many variables, and I didnt want anybody stripping in the gym.

Jennifer Amador, age 41, lost 40 pounds; and Autumn Weber, 36 years old, lost 34 pounds. Each lost the same percentage of body fat figured from a formula based on starting weight with a one percent difference. Each will receive the $250 first place award.

I was shocked. As late as last week, there...

Williams trade gives Waterloo stability in net

WATERLOO, Iowa — As a member of the Sioux Falls Stampede, Stephon Williams skated past the Waterloo Black Hawks’ bench during player introductions and gave his opponents a staredown before delivering a dominant performance in the goal.

Black Hawks’ coach PK O’Handley filed that away.

That season, Williams helped the Stampede to the Western Division finals. A year later, O’Handley thought his team needed that kind of poise and that kind of experience defending his net.

“He stared our bench down, then put in a performance of what I thought was really good. I put it in my back pocket,” O’Handley said. “His confidence …...

Seattle crowds greet Obama during fundraising trip

SEATTLE

People lined the streets near a Seattle waterfront home and a downtown theater as President Barack Obama was in Washingtons largest city Thursday for fundraisers, many waving signs thanking the president for his new support of gay marriage.

Obama was in Seattle for two events – one at a Madrona home and the other at the Paramount Theatre. In addition to Obama supporters, others gathered signatures outside the downtown fundraiser as part of an attempt to overturn Washingtons new same-sex marriage law. State voters likely will see one or possibly two gay marriage ballot measures this fall.

Obamas Seattle visit was his first trip following his announcement Wednesday...

Real online gambling and social network casino games are on a collision course

One of the biggest stories in tech and gaming this year is the coming collision of real online gambling and social-networking casino games.

The enthusiasm for the intersection of social games and online gambling was obvious at the Global iGaming Summit amp; Expo, an annual event in its 12th year that is taking place this week in San Francisco. The conference drew twice as many people as it did a year ago, mainly because of a step that the US has taken toward legalizing online gambling at the state level.

Back in December, the Justice Department reinterpreted a law that had previously prohibited online gambling. Since then, the state of Nevada has been the first to legalize in-state...
